[ARCHIVED] Northlake Town Council Election Postponed Until November 3, 2020

Members of the Northlake Town Council voted to postpone the Town Council election, regularly scheduled for May 2, 2020, to November 3, 2020 to protect the health and well-being of voters during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The election will determine the offices of three Town Council members: Place 1, Place 2 and Place 3. Only one office, Place 2, is contested.

On March 18, 2020, Texas Governor Greg Abbott issued a proclamation authorizing political subdivisions that would otherwise hold elections on May 2, 2020 to move their general elections to November 3, 2020 due to public health concerns related to COVID-19.

The Town intends to join other Texas cities in petitioning to the State of Texas to hold the election on July 14, 2020 in conjunction with the primary runoff election. If the State does not allow the Town to move the election to July 14, the Town will proceed with the current date of November 3, 2020.

The motion to move forward with the postponement of the May 2, 2020 general election passed unanimously. The Town will conduct voting between the hours of 7:00 am and 7:00 pm on Tuesday, November 3, 2020 at the polling locations determined by the Denton County Election Administrator in accordance with the Joint Election Agreement.

Those voters who intend to participate in the November 3 Town Council election must register to vote by October 5, 2020. Early voting by personal appearance will be conducted beginning on October 19, 2020 and continuing through October 30, 2020.

The Town will preserve all candidate filings and ballot order actions that are currently in place. The postponement does not reopen the candidate filing period. Candidate filings and all supporting documentation can be viewed on the Town of Northlake’s website, under Government > Departments > Town Secretary > Election Information.

The Town continues to monitor the COVID-19 pandemic and follow the guidance of the State of Texas and Denton County to slow the spread of the virus and protect the health and well-being of residents.
